The Macaws class have an aquarium
On the first day in the Macaws class:
We created beautiful pictures of fish in the morning. In the afternoon we visited Timperley Aquatics and bought some fish and a snail named Paul. All the children were amazing and enjoyed looking at the different types of fish. We also saw reptiles and a huge Macaw parrot.
So why fish? Below are some benefits of having an aquarium in a classroom:
The benefits of having an aquarium for children with autism.
Your child will be proud to have a pet.
Watching the fish swim around the aquarium has a calming effect on children with autism and the adults who take care of them!
You can build a child’s vocabulary exposing them to new vocabulary whilst taking care of the fish and cleaning the aquarium together.
Teaching a child with autism to take care of a fish is an educational functional activity. For example, one of our goals as parents and educators is to teach children with autism to engage in functional everyday activities that will help them live happier and more successful lives.
Taking care of the fish in your aquarium will enhance your child’s visual schedule.
Watching the fish swim around the fish tank is a wonderful sensory activity for children with autism.
Taking care of the fish and your therapeutic aquarium is a wonderful activity to do with children.

Some research has associated viewing fish in aquariums with positive well-being outcomes; as there is no physical contact with the animal.
Review findings suggest that interacting with fish in aquariums has the potential to benefit human well-being, although research on this topic is currently limited.
